here&#8217;s a few shots before I soldered and clipped the leads.\u00a0 C102 is the re-stuffed can freshly installed.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/paulcarbone.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/IMG_5587.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-935\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-935\" src=\"https:\/\/paulcarbone.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/IMG_5587.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_5587.JPG\" width=\"2250\" height=\"3000\" srcset=\"https:\/\/paulcarbone.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/IMG_5587.jpg 2250w, https:\/\/paulcarbone.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/IMG_5587-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/paulcarbone.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/IMG_5587-768x1024.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 2250px) 100vw, 2250px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/paulcarbone.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/IMG_5590.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-938\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-938\" src=\"https:\/\/paulcarbone.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/IMG_5590.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_5590.JPG\" width=\"3000\" height=\"2250\" srcset=\"https:\/\/paulcarbone.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/IMG_5590.jpg 3000w, https:\/\/paulcarbone.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/IMG_5590-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/paulcarbone.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/IMG_5590-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/paulcarbone.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/IMG_5590-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/paulcarbone.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/IMG_5590-400x300.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 3000px) 100vw, 3000px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I was conflicted about just ripping out old components and replacing them with new ones, but (and I&#8217;m paraphrasing his words from a conversation I had with Kurt): Tektronix used the best components they had available to them at the time.\u00a0 If they had these newer, more reliable components, they would have used them instead.\u00a0 You shouldn&#8217;t feel bad as long as the restoration is done in the spirit of the original design and keeps up with their level of craftsmanship.\u00a0 I&#8217;m happy with my work so far and think I&#8217;m on the right track.<\/p>\n<p>I decided to power this up on the variac.\u00a0 It was almost midnight, so I didn&#8217;t bother with photos or videos, but:<\/p>\n<p>I started to hear the whine of the high voltage power supply around 60 VAC on the input (frequency is around 4kHZ, wonder if this is right?).\u00a0 Eventually I saw a fuzzy green dot on the screen around 80VAC, that quickly drifted off.\u00a0 If I turn the intensity control all the way up, I see the familiar glow of on the screen you get when the beam is deflected way off the face.\u00a0 All other controls are unresponsive.<\/p>\n<p>The +1,500V supply is around 1,000V, the -1,500V supply is around -800V.\u00a0 I would like to get those missing 1,200V back&#8230;\u00a0 The -140V supply seems to regulate albeit somewhat loosely.\u00a0 The 225V, not so much, and the 225V adjust control doesn&#8217;t do anything.\u00a0 I&#8217;m suspecting I have to replace the reminder of the .01\u03bcF bumblebee caps in the supply.\u00a0 Maybe I should just rename this hobby &#8220;replacing old capacitors&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s a start!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A bag of parts from Newark arrived and I went to work replacing capacitors in the power supply.\u00a0 First, I finished re-stuffing one of the cans: I&#8217;m really happy with how these came out.
